These are a few samples of the kinds of styles of henna art you can get every Saturday from 12:30 - 5:00 pm at Midnight Sun, 1055 Park Street, Jacksonville, Florida, 32204. 

Henna tattoo is not at all like ink. It is an herbal dye. Each artist will make her own special blend to give you the longest lasting stain possible 

Henna tattoo is a hot weather art form! When you get your henna, be sure to walk around and enjoy some sun. When you are warm, your pores open and the henna can penetrate the skin to stain it. 

The first pattern is an original design. It is a cuff and one finger style.... this is a very popular style this year and there are many samples on line on our Facebook Page.

The second pattern is that of another artist. My client brought it in from the web. in general, I prefer to do my own designs, and I am able to do art in this pattern style. 

The last is another original. Usually clients will look at photos of art I have done and pick a few they like. I will make a special design for them based on their style choices. 

It is very important that you do not have any body lotion or antibacterial soap on your skin when you come to get a design, the henna cannot penetrate that chemical, and you will not get a good outcome.
  
Many people think that these pictures show the final tattoo. In fact these are photos of the paste on the skin. 

The finished color is always an reddish color. If you take good care of your henna you may get a dark red, ruby red or black cherry red. 

It is up to you. The longer you leave the paste on the skin, the hotter you get, the deeper the paste will stain. 

It is important to read the aftercare tips on this blog so that you will have the best color.

I will be sure to work with your budget. If you find a very complex design then it  is best to make a private appointment. Walk-in henna day is a day for everyone to get a taste! I am able to complete a simple henna tattoo in 10 minutes. More complex patterns take longer...... but the Midnight Sun is full of wonderful imported treasures!! 

Henna Time!! Finally it's hot enough to get a good paste & dark stain!

Here are a few photos from henna this season. Many people do not know:

1. Henna is a heat activated body art. 
2. The dark paste you see on the skin is Not the finished tattoo.
3. Henna stains darkest on the hands and feet.
4. Henna paste must stay on the skin at least 3 hours to give a dark stain.
5. Real henna is always a shade of reddish brown. 
6. Henna stains all skin colors. 
7. Everyone will have a different finished color. 
8. It takes 48 hours for your final color to show.
9. If you keep vegetable oil on your finished tattoo your color lasts longer.
10. Natural henna will last 7 to 10 days.     
11. An experienced artist can apply a good design in 10 minutes.

Black Henna? No such thing! Henna paste on & paste off! The real color of henna tattoo.

I receive so many calls from people wanting black henna. It is surprising to me that after all the public service announcements about the dangers of "black henna" that people are still confused about this topic.  There is no such thing as black henna. th

This paste on the skin can appear to be black henna.

I make fresh henna paste for my clients. This assures you will have the best finished color.  How well you care for your design determines the quality of the finished color.

Keep the paste on for at least 3 hours. The longer the paste stays on the darker your finished color will be. If you will walk in the sun, or at least stay active so that your blood circulates and you are warm, the henna will give a better color.

Also, after you take the paste off, please keep a layer of olive or coconut oil on the design area. This will keep the henna warm, and keep water out of the skin.  Keep your hands out of chlorine water, avoid scrubbing your hands,

If you take good care of your henna tattoo you can have a finished color that looks like this!

This is the color about 24 hours after the paste has been removed.

Henna takes 48 hours to give its darkest stain on the skin. Many clients will sleep in a sock or mitten to help get a dark color.

I offer you a plastic food service glove to help you "sweat" the henna design.

This is an art form that comes from very hot climates - Africa, India and the Middle East. Air conditioning is not common.

In the USA we seem to think that 72 degrees is the ideal temperature...... however 85  - 95 degrees is the best temperature to keep then pores open. If you sweat a bit, this is also good, it keeps the paste moist on your skin.

If you scrape the paste off and do not see color right away, do not be alarmed. Many people have a very light stain at first.

Please: No Lotions, No Hand Sanitizers! No petroleum products on your skin before or after henna. These often chemical products will pull the color away. Natural lotions only.

Henna Tattoo Tips & Aftercare.

I am very pleased with the results of my 5 minute test of my henna paste. Henna powder harvested 2015 stains very quickly, giving a deep reddish brown on my finger tip with no special care taken at all.

After care.
If you want to get the best henna tattoo possible here are very helpful pointers!

1. Be sure your hands are clean!
   
2.  Do not wear body lotion.
3. Do not have hand sanitizer on your skin.
4. Leave your henna paste on at least 3 hours.
5. Remove your henna design by gently scraping the paste from your skin.
6. Use olive or coconut oil to remove any excess paste.
7. Keep a natural oil (not grape seed) on your henna for the first 3 days.
8. Put oil over your design before taking a shower.
9. Keep your henna out of water (chlorine in tap water can bleach the color.)
10. Remember -  heat is good for henna. Walk in the sun, sweat a bit. 

Henna works by penetrating the layers of the skin. The longer the paste stays on the skin the darker the finished color will be.

• How long will my henna tattoo last? 

If you follow the instructions above, you should get very good color because you are taking care to keep the stain in the skin. The complete design should show for at least one week. Henna will then begin to fade as skin cells regenerate. 

• How long will it take to do a henna tattoo?

In general a $15 design can be done in 10 minutes or so. The time it takes to apply depends on where you want the henna tattoo, how complex a design you choose, how large a design you choose.

• What else should I know?

Henna is for the hands and feet. You will always get your best finished color there. The henna will provide a lighter stain on the arms and legs. I prefer not to do the back nor the upper arm. I will - however you will not get the same deep stain as you would on your hands.

Traditional Henna Tattoo - Great Art in 20 minutes!

Here is another photo of henna tattoo. This pattern was done at The Midnight Sun in about 20 minutes. This is a free hand pattern, or a "Chef's Choice" henna tattoo.

Art like this takes about 20 minute to complete. If you choose to have a spritz of the lemon sugar glaze applied to secure the henna paste to the skin, you may want to wait an additional 10 minutes for the henna paste to dry a bit before the glaze goes on.

Henna tattoo is a heat activated art form. As temperatures in Jacksonville Florida become cooler.. henna will no longer be offered on a walk-in basis at the Midnight Sun.

Henna gives the best finished color in the summer time because the weather is warmer, we tend to sweat.. thus the pores open & the henna paste can penetrate the skin.

Also, when we are sweating, our perspiration  helps the paste stay moist on the skin.. and this also helps to get a good finished color.
