Henna Tattoo in 2020! Come to my new location!

Greetings! It has been a long road to some henna tattoo this year! I did not want to work until the Governor gave all Tattoo Artists the OK to go back to work. Although my art does not penetrate the skin, we are going to be very close to one another... there is no way around it.  

I am happy to say I found a new henna powder that is fresh and fragrant and gives a deep red color when well cared for. Caring for your henna is your part of the process. Putting a good design with quality henna paste is my part.

Preparation is critical this year as we have hand sanitizers to watch out for.  I have no idea what a hand sanitizer will do to henna if you have it on your skin before we decorate, but it is best if you come with clean skin. As well, you will not be able to use a sanitizer while you have henna on.

To preserve your henna, please keep a light coat of a natural oil over your design. The best oils are olive, coconut, and avocado. Please do not use grape seed oil, for some reason it takes the color from the design.

If you put oil over your henna before you put your hands in water, your design will last as long as is possible. I do not use any dyes or chemicals in my paste. This is not black henna, nor is it from a tube made anywhere else. I have been making paste for 20 years now and promise you there are only fresh  food quality ingredient.s

Jagua or Henna • Which to Choose

Jagua does offer some advantages that henna tattoo just can't. Because Jagua is not a heat activated paste an artist can apply it most anywhere on your body. 

For those who want temporary tattoos on the shoulders, back, side, thigh or other areas where henna is not use, this product will stain your skin. 

I do see that stencils are often sold with the kits, so if you are a beginner to this kind of art, you are in luck! You can transfer the pattern and trace it using  a squeeze bottle with a needle style tip. 

I kept doing research and have decided I will not take up the art form for the following reasons:

Cost: 
Henna Paste: I can make a several cones of first class henna paste with fresh powder and premium oils for less than $5.00 a cone.  

A 2 oz squeeze applicator of Jagua at retail costs $25.95. The kits are about the same price. I would have to charge far more for Jagua tattoos than I do for henna. 

Texture: 
Henna: I can mix the henna to be just as I like it. A more liquid paste penetrates your skin and dries more slowly (10 t0 15 minutes) so that you get a great color. 

Jagua: It is sold as a gel if I buy a pre-mix, so I have little control of the way it flows. If I buy a mix it up kit, then I can have more control but spend 3 to 5 times as much as I do for a henna cone. 

Dry Time:  
Henna: Henna paste will dry in 15 minutes. I will spray it with a lemon/sugar mixture (touch of clove oil) to help the paste stay on your skin as long as possible. You can then go out an enjoy the day. 

Jagua: Instructions suggest your remain still and allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for jagua to completely dry. There are additional instructions that indicate that getting a Jagua tattoo will define your day!

Placement:

Henna stains best on hands, feet, arms below the elbow and legs to the knee. I also offer belly tattoo for pregnancy and henna art for the head for chemo patients. 

Jaugau sites show photos of Jauga tattoo in many places I cannot place henna. Jagua vendors offer the same suggestions about placement for best color as I have listed above. 

Aftercare

Henna: You have control over the finished color. The longer you leave the paste on the skin, the hotter you get (sweating is good), the deeper the henna stain can  penetrate your skin.  

As well, after you have taken the paste off if you keep a light coat of coconut, olive, or other natural oil on the skin. If you keep the area warm over the next 48 hours you can help your design darken and last longer. 

Jagua: The final result seems to depend on leaving the paste undisturbed on your skin for as long as possible. Just as with henna, it takes 48 hours for the final color to appear. 

I think I like the idea of henna best. Each person will get their own unique finished color. Henna paste can give a wide range of tattoo shades. I make a fragrant paste that many find refreshing to wear.

How to Get the Best Henna Tattoo

In Jacksonville, Florida, you have the opportunity to be decorated in the “color of love” by an artist with 20 years experience in the art of henna tattoo. 

Henna tattoo is a body art that stains the skin leaving a red to reddish brown design that can last 7 to 10 days if you take good care of your canvas.       

Fresh and fragrant henna paste is made using food grade tea & spices. First quality essential oils and fresh henna powder are combined to make a calming paste that flows easily onto your skin.     

Traditionally applied to the hands and feet, the purpose of henna is to compliment the natural beauty of the client. Every one has different hands!  Some are more square, some long and thing, some are oval and some are rugged. 

Every design will not look good on you. In fact, if you are a tiny person, some of the designs you see online may not fit as pictured on your hand.  

It is good to tell your artist the style of henna you like, or to have a few images in your phone of designs you prefer. Please note that a $15 design will give you a simple, yet lovelyhenna design.

If you would like a full backhand henna design with cuff, then that pattern choice will cost more. Henna pricing is determined by the amount of time it takes to accomplish your pattern. 

Some hennas that take up a lot of room on the hand may cost $15 as the art is open and bold.   Other henna tattoos that cover the backhand with a cuff may cost $30. (Pricing is per hand - or foot. )

If you do choose to have henna applied to your feet here are few tips:

• Wear shoes that do not cover the area where you want the design. 

• Please come when it is not raining! 

• Please exfoliate and do not apply any lotion to your feet at all! 

So, to get the best henna tattoo, tell your artist the styles you like and how much you want to spend. Then, relax and enjoy the experience.

Many first time henna clients in Jacksonville, Florida are new to the idea of henna, or mehandi which is a temporary “tattoo”. 

There are no needles used. A fragrant paste is created by your artist to stain your skin. The finished color depends on you! 

The goal of a true henna artist is to make you look beautiful! Every woman has a different hand shape and therefore I design a custom tattoo to make your hand, wrist, arm, foot or ankle as lovely as possible. 

Henna is a freehand art form, and as I have been practicing this art for 20 years, I just need a little bit of direction from you. I need to know if you like “Tribal”, “Floral” or “Traditional” henna patterns. 

While it is fine to bring along a photo from the Internet to give me an idea of the style you like, on a “Walk In” henna day the goal is for everyone who wants some art to enjoy the process and receive a lovely design. 

Complex designs that look great on Pinterest usually take a good while to apply, cost much more than $15 or $20, and may or may not make your hand look lovely. 

Many designs from the web that I am seeing these days are very symmetric! Henna hands don’t match. The beauty of the art lies between the chaos and the negative space. 

I have a portfolio of over 300 designs for you to review. I have pattern books as well, and you are welcome to browse through them to give me an idea of what you like. 

What works best is for you to tell me how much you want to spend and the style you like. Then, please allow me to give you the best henna tattoo for your hand shape and budget!

Henna Tattoo & The Rainy Season in Jacksonville

Spirit Vision Henna will not be offering henna tattoo this Saturday, June 17, 2017 due to the long week of rainy weather. 

It has been raining every day for the last four or perhaps five days in Jacksonville, Florida. 

Although the forecast for Saturday promises 90 degrees and no rain, I am skeptical. 

I prefer to make henna paste when it is at least 80 degrees Farenheit and the weather is sunny. 

If it is 90 degrees, the henna powder will release good color in a day. 

At 80 degrees, I prefer to allow two days for the paste to develop. (I have always made my own henna paste with fresh, first quality ingredients.) 

As a henna artist who has been offering mehandi for 20 years, most often on Saturday, I can tell you that it seems that the weather is conspiring against me. Four or five years ago, henna season began in late February or early March.

As the weather stays cool longer, henna season starts later & later. This year I could not get a really offer first quality henna until early May. 

Many people do not know that henna is a heat activated body art and that the preparation of a good henna paste is required heat and dry weather. 

I cure my henna outside on my porch. I leave it on the ledge the first day. I will bring it in to rest, and essential oils and put it out to release the dye again the next day.

have not been able to make a fresh paste this week. The weather has been humid and overcast. Making henna paste in humid weater really doesn’t work well. The powder seems to absorb water from the air regardless of the protection I take to keep the paste dry. This results in a poor quality stain. 

If you come in for a henna tattoo, spend time and money to buy a lovley desing, I want you get the best color possible. 

If you take your henna tattoo out in to the sunshine and allow it to cure for several hours this really helps you get good color.  The hotter you get, the more you perspire, the more your pores will open. This allows the paste to penetrate deeper into your skin. 

The henna will take 48 hours to develop. Again, after you scrape the paste off your skin, if you will stay warm you will get a better stain. In short - the hotter you get, the better your finished color. 

72 degrees is too “cold” to get the best color.  80 or 90 degrees is just fine for a good stain. I realize that many people keep their homes in the low 70s in Summer. To get a good stain there are steps you can take to keep your henna hot while you stay cool:

• After you scrape the paste from your skin, you may choose to wear a glove to keep your henna warm.
• Please keep oil on your henna tattoo to keep the heat in and water out. 
• You may choose to use a blow dryer to heat your henna up from time to time.
• If you got henna on your wrist or inner arm, you may also use a plastic film to trap heat and help the color devleop.

Henna tattoo is not at all like ink. It is an herbal dye. Each artist will make her own special blend to give you the longest lasting stain possible 

Henna tattoo is a hot weather art form! When you get your henna, be sure to walk around and enjoy some sun. When you are warm, your pores open and the henna can penetrate the skin to stain it. 

The first pattern is an original design. It is a cuff and one finger style.... this is a very popular style this year and there are many samples on line on our Facebook Page.

The second pattern is that of another artist. My client brought it in from the web. in general, I prefer to do my own designs, and I am able to do art in this pattern style. 

The last is another original. Usually clients will look at photos of art I have done and pick a few they like. I will make a special design for them based on their style choices. 

It is very important that you do not have any body lotion or antibacterial soap on your skin when you come to get a design, the henna cannot penetrate that chemical, and you will not get a good outcome.
  
Many people think that these pictures show the final tattoo. In fact these are photos of the paste on the skin. 

The finished color is always an reddish color. If you take good care of your henna you may get a dark red, ruby red or black cherry red. 

It is up to you. The longer you leave the paste on the skin, the hotter you get, the deeper the paste will stain. 

It is important to read the aftercare tips on this blog so that you will have the best color.

Henna Time!! Finally it's hot enough to get a good paste & dark stain!

Fine line bridal quality henna paste on & off! See the finished color.

It is always a pleasure to provide the special service of fine line henna tattoo. Usually a client will find something in one of the intricate pattern books on hand. I have a good collection of traditional henna tattoo patterns from India, and often something there will spark the beginnings of a pattern.

In general, the purpose of henna tattoo is to make the woman's had appear even more lovely, and so pattern book designs are adjusted to fit. Here are photos of fine line henna with the paste on and then off the skin.

For this recipe I used three kinds of henna powder from Henna Sooq, home made tea with lots of herbs, spices and flowers as well as a good mix of essential oils to help the henna release the best color. If you watch this blog, you will see that the finished color on many photos is really quite red. I hope to provide this quality of color for the rest of the season.

What color is a finished henna tattoo? Here are some photos.

Many people are still confused about henna! The see photos of paste on the skin and think that the black paste is the henna tattoo. The paste on the skin is the beginning of a process that will give the various shades of red to reddish brown that are indeed the true colors of henna.

Each person is different. The same henna paste may give a dark color on one person and an lighter color on another. There are so many factors that influence colors. More info on finished color is on my site.

Our new discovery is that coconut oil gives a very good finished color. (If you recently received a henna tattoo from Spirit Vision, please feel welcome to send a photo of your finished color after 48 hours. This gracious client did just that.)

Traditional Henna Patterns for the Back of the Hands

I do not offer henna tattoo for sale during cold weather months as it is much more difficult for clients to get good color, however,  I did a henna for a visiting friend.

We were able to keep the paste on skin wet for awhile by applying lemon sugar. As well, once the paste was glazed and dry, I wrapped her hands, first in tissue, then in plastic food service style gloves.

Wrapping henna provides a way for the henna to "heat up" and the pores of the skin to open to receive the dye. Here is a photo of the pattern with paste on the skin.

Henna Tattoo to Celebrate Preganancies

Here is a lovely hearts and flowers style tattoo that an expectant mother choose to celebrate the birth of a daughter.

It was a pleasure to do this henna, and baby was quite helpful, very still during the process.

I always make a special paste for expecting mothers, and am sure that all essential oils used in the paste are safe for pregnancy.

If you are thinking of celebrating the upcoming birth of your child, please notice that it is important to wear clothing that will allow the paste to remain on your skin in an undisturbed way.

Low rider pants or an elastic waistband in skirt or pant makes it easy to keep the henna safe. A crop top or other blouse that can be pulled out of the way also ensures that the design will be able to rest on the skin as long as possible.

It is also wonderful to have a driver, so that you may recline on the way home, and watch out for the seat belt!! Some bring a towel to place between the henna and the seat belt. It is best to do this kind of henna now.... heat of the summer..... so that the paste can penetrate the skin as deeply as possible. For more information on why henna works, visit my FAQ page.

Do Henna Designs Mean Anything?

Here is a henna tattoo design that does have a meaning. It is a bride and groom in an embellished heart.

Although in this case, the tattoo is done as a small decorative jewel in the palm, it could easily be incorporated into the more extensive or elaborate Bridal Henna.

The images here are very traditional in that the man is wearing a head dress, the woman a nose ring that is often worn by Hindu brides.

The best color always happens in the palm of the hand, and if you have a bit of patience, and perhaps a friend who will drive the car, you too can enjoy the rich deep red color that comes from placing henna in the palm.

The color of love......... this is a photo of the paste, which appears black, on the skin. When the paste is removed, the finished color develops over the next 48 hours.

Here is an example of a "Chef's Choice" henna tattoo. With a nice fluid paste, this type of tattoo only takes about 8 minutes or so..... perhaps 10 to apply.

The goal is to create a lovely pattern that is flattering to the hand of the wearer.

As each hand is different, allowing the henna artist to choose the pattern often works very well.

Rajasthani henna powder has been combined with my special henna tea, lemon juice, and various essential oils to give you a deep and long lasting henna tattoo. I have heard that there is some "bad henna" happening in town. Customers at various shops in Five Points have remarked that their henna ran, blurred, did not last and was a pale color. This is not my work.**

For those who do not know, henna is a heat activated body art. The hotter it is outside, the more your pores open, the deeper the henna stain can penetrate your skin and the darker your finished color will be. 

Henna Patterns - Palm & Back Hand Styles

In as few a 15 minutes, you too may have an fine henna design drawn to your specifications.

One of the young ladies came with a photo of mehandi ( henna tattoo ) design for the back of the hand, and it was modified to be most flattering to her hand shape.

The pattern you see in the palm of the hand originated in one of the many pattern books on hand. As always, henna designs are customized to fit the wearer, and to ensure both a lovely pattern with paste on the skin as well as a dark finished color when the paste is removed.

I don't see my henna tattoo! There is nothing there!! Don't panic.

It is important to note that henna is a heat activated body art. This means that the longer you leave the henna paste on your skin, and the hotter You get..... the deeper color stain will develop.

Sometimes people get a henna, go to an environment that is 72 degrees, leave the paste on their skin, scrape it off, sleep in an room that is 72 degrees..... and wonder why they don't have dark henna color.

If you have received a henna from me, then the answer is that you did not sweat your henna. Wait... give it some time.. and the color will develop. It may take all of 48 hours for the final finished color to appear. ** Please see updated at page end.

If you have not taken good care of your henna, put it on the upper arm, back, or in some cases, the back of the hand, it may take longer for your color to become rich.

Also note, in a design such as this one, the darkest color will be on the fingers, and then the design will become lighter as it moves up the arm. The lightest color stain will be the cuff portion.

This is because the texture of the skin changes, and this affects the color of the henna tattoo.

Those photos you see of deep red henna stains are usually done on the palm of the hand.This will always be the best place to put your henna tattoo. I understand that most people don't want to do that... but that is where you get your ruby red outcomes.

It is possible to go an extra step, wrap your henna in tissue, and send you home with a plastic glove taped in place to help sweat - or heat up - your design. Just ask.. I am happy to help you have the best possible out come.

However, please remember, that henna is a heat activated herbal paste. If you are sweaty, then that paste stays damp, and thus interacts with your skin for the longest possible time, giving you the deepest darkest color.

I use fresh, home made henna paste. I have new essential oils for the season, fresh 2010 henna from Rajhistan, and a nice lemon sugar glaze. I can't bring must more to the table than that. The rest is up to you.

** However, if you received a henna from me between June 18th and June 26th of this year, and did not get a good out come, please contact me by phone or email. Apparently, the new powder/paste I was using did not give good results. I am happy to redo your henna at no charge if you are one of the few clients that had this experience during this time.

** I had two different tubes of fresh, home made paste - one worked very well, one did not. So if you had henna and got great color this is why. Poor color... my deepest apologies .. I have new paste. **

Henna paste goes on wet ( as seen in the picture ) and then dries to a wearable pattern that stays on the skin as long as you are able to keep some care not to brush it off too quickly.

Henna Peacocks... the joyful diversity of henna tattoo designs

Here is a photo of a henna tattoo for the inner arm. This image is of a henna peacock riding a paisley wave... embellished and spaced to fit the clients arm.

This design runs from above the wrist to a few inches below the elbow. Henna tattoo will give a good stain on this part of the body, but the color will be more brown than red as the skin on the inner arm is more fine.

I used a lovely henna powder from Henna Sooq for this paste. The paste is stringy, wet, and makes very fine lines, as you can see. I sprayed the paste with a bit of lemon sugar to keep it moist and to help it stay on the skin.

One of the lovely things about the peacock design is that is easy to apply to a variety of locations. While the first image is intricate and took about 10 minutes to complete, the next image you will see is one of a tiny peackcock henna on a tiny hand.

I will offer henna tattoo to children who are accompanied by their parents, and who are familiar with their children's allergies. In all the years I have been doing henna, I have not yet had anyone have an adverse reaction.

I take great care in creating a paste that is aromatic, soothing, fresh and easy to apply. This makes it safe for children. My littlest customers only have to be able to sit still for a minute or two to get a lovely little tattoo.

If you are not sure about your little one, I am happy to do a spot test for you prior to applying a true design.
